Prayer For Owen Meany Buy now

The very first book we sold was Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving..... To someone who was on their way home for the pub!
Throughout the bank holiday weekend we had been counting books, painting shelves and trying to work out where everything went before we opened on the Tuesday morning, and were about to call it a day when Geraint and Eleri Lovgreen came to the door.
Although I was more than ready to go home, it was lovely to welcome friends to the shop. While Eleri was admiring the accomplished paintwork skills that Sel and his family had been practising over the weekend, Geraint was perusing the shelves.  "Oh! i've been looking for this" he said "I've lost my copy. Have you read it? You should!" and promptly brought it to the counter. I had no float and no idea how to work the till, but luckily I had change in my pocket and Geraint left Palas Print as our first (happy) customer.
I have to admit that I still haven't read the book, but I did read Last Night in Twisted River last year, and I loved Joh Irving's writing style and his talent for storytelling.

2

Austerlitz Buy now

Even though I had worked in the book industry before, this was a new experience for me. We had bought the stock from the previous owners, and it would take time to get to know it well. I remember someone asking me at the end of our first week "What's the best seller so far?" I didn't know the answer but I had a good idea what it could be. There was a book called Austerlitz by WG Sebald on the table of English books and I remembered selling many copies during the week. Of course, when I opened the Sunday newspaper, Austerlitz was there, topping the bestsellers list for that week. The book still sells well 10 years later and is one of our modern classics.

3

Life of Rebecca Jones Buy now

Right, a confession. The shop opened in July, not September, but this was the first opportunity to have a party! I have to say this now, because, less than a month after the shop opened O! Tyn y Gorchudd' by Angharad Pruce won the Literary Prose Medal at Tyddewi National Eisteddfod. I read the book immediately that evening, and must say it remains one of my favourite pieces of Welsh literature. It was such a pleasure to receive an English language edition of it recently; a beautiful little book with a picture by Gwen Johnon the cover...and so nice to read reviews in the press beyond Wales that confirmed my feeling (and that of many others) that this is one of the first classics of the Century.

4

Welsh women's poetry Buy now

By now I've lost count of how many events we have held / organised in the shop, but I remember the first one, it was the launch of Honno's anthology 'Welsh Women's Poetry'. Charlotte Williams, author of 'Sugar and Slate' chaired the evening. I think I sent an invitation to everyone I knew, but I was so worried - would anyone turn up? Did I have enough books? Enough wine? The shop was jam-packed...and the people of Caernarfon and the area have carried on supporting us, giving confidence to myself and others to organise events in the shop and in the town - such as Noson 4a6 and Gŵyl Arall.

Eisteddfod & More

The National Eisteddfod came to Eryri in 2005, and so we decided to take a stall there. It was a great Eisteddfod, and we enjoyed meeting old and new customers, but while we were there, the workers were busy preparing the new shop, because exactly a fortnight later, we moved the shop from one side of the street to the other, to it's present home, adding a sofa, coffee machine and a sizeable children's corner.

6

On the High Street and onLine

In 2008 we produced a website, which includes information about what's on in the shop, and is linked to our stock control system so that you can check what we have in stock, buy it online to be posted out or to be collected from the shop. We have over 500 online customers to date, and regularly post books out all over the world. Our online bestseller is Last Hundred Days by Patrick McGuinness, probably due to the fact that as the author, he directed people to the website to buy it, particularly when the book was longlisted for the Booker Prize 2011. The book continued to be nominated for several other prizes, and subsequently won Wales Book of the Year 2012, and is still one of my favourite books of the past few years. BUY NOW

The Proof of the pudding
is in the Reading

Kayley says
I remember the first book I was given to read as a ‘proof’ after I started working at the shop last year – We the Animals by Justin Torres. I was pleased to be able to read it before the general public, it gave the book an air of secrecy! However, I also genuinely enjoyed the story and the author’s special talent for writing almost like poetry. When the book came out in hardback I bought a copy straight away and read it again a second time. It lost none of the atmospheric air it had the first time and since then I’ve recommended this book to several customers and to the Oren reading group, in the hopes of getting as many people as possible to read it! I will be reading a chapter this evening, which I hope will give you a taste for this book  – I hope you’ll be there!

Support
Local Economy and Diversity

Sel Jones says:
I've always enjoyed reading but I hated going in to bookshops because they were so snooty. So different to Palas Print! which has also expanded my horizons so much as Eirian has been asking me to reading different things. Without the book shop and Palas Print especially, I would never have read The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Cave, Petrograd, The Peoples act of Love or Manituana. Support us because of the choice, keep siops on the high street and money in the local economy.

You're views?

I get a buzz every time someone finds the perfect book, and each time
someone says something nice about the shop. Another highlight was our
inclusion in the Guardian Guide to Independent Bookshops just over a
year ago. We knew we were going to be listed in the handbook, but it was a real surprise to open the handbook and to find that a local author and customer had written an article about the shop. We depend on the support of local people, and we thank you for your support over the last ten years, and look forward to providing you with books and more for another 10 years!

This is what was written in the Guardian. How about sending us your impressions / experiences of Palas Print. Maybe we could include them in this record of 10 years of Palas Print?
