From the title, The Life of Rebecca Jones suggests a straightforward biographical text. However, the reader is in for a treat as what actually emerges is a moving piece of semi-fictional creative writing peppered with various genre styles, including memoir, biography, ghost story and family history. At the heart of Price’s award winning book – winning Wales Book of the Year in 2003 – is the notion of recovered voices, of giving a literary space to a Welsh way of life in the early twentieth century, which is almost beyond recognition to present-day readers. A combined celebration and condemnation of Welsh-language culture is what emerges, with a powerful narrative twist at the close of the text which prompts questions on the constructions and realities of national identity.
