The disordered chronology portrays a descent into madness, as the narrator describes violence and sexual perversion, alongside spiritual and economic depression, in a society feeling the oppressive effects of capitalism. PritchardÂ’s characterisation of losing a traditional way of life epitomises the grief felt within these communities, and how they become prone to disintegration under an imposed industrial regime.
