What the Water Gave Me
by Gwenllian Jones Date Added: Friday 10 June, 2011
Here is a collection of poems that will please anyone with an interest in the life and work of Frida Kahlo. In her treatment of the artist’s paintings, Petit writes with a voice that could very easily be mistaken for that of Kahlo herself. The poetry seems to emanate directly from the artist’s brushstrokes and the words become kindred to the oil droplets in Kahlo’s paintings, providing a worthy translation of her work. At times, the reading becomes an uncomfortably physical experience, much the same as that of of studying the artist’s paintings, and the ever-present trauma of her unhappy life is presented to us again and again. The poetry is fresh, and well worth a read.
